There was “hoops hysteria” at the Scranton Community Center on Sunday, March 13. 4-H members and leaders, as well as many relatives, friends and spectators enjoyed friendly games. It was the scene of the annual Greene County 4-H basketball tournament, hosted by Greenbrier 4-H Club.
Much fun was had watching the younger 4-H members dribble – or not – down the floor to the basket, weaving through the seemingly-giant senior kids, making for some their first basket ever. One leader coach, overcome with emotion watching a shy girl from her club make the final basket of the game, commented, “Thank you! This was so good!” Greenbrier leader Linda Hedges replied, “That is why we continue doing the tournament each year.”
Teams from Scranton Barnstormers, Hardin Happy Hustlers, Junction Jets, Raccoon River Rockets, and Greenbrier participated with Junction Food Producers winning the championship battle against Cedar Highland.

Hedges thanked referees Chan Burkett and Dave Dideriksen, Josh Hedges and Ricky Stephenson at the scorer’s table, and Peoples Trust & Savings Bank of Scranton and Shopko for their support.
“Congratulations to all the 4-H members that played with wonderful sportsmanship, making a great day for all participants and spectators,” Hedges said.
